Sarah Richardson has been a calligrapher for 5 years. She first learned modern calligraphy from Lauren Essl, then learned copperplate calligraphy in a workshop taught by Nina Tran, and followed up by studying The Zanerian Manual and Dr. Joe Vitolo’s ebook Script in the Copperplate Style. Sarah graduated from Hendrix College with a degree in Art History, and recently graduated with her Certificate in Design Communication Arts from UCLA. Her work has been featured by Gwyneth Paltrow’s website Goop. She is a member of The International Association of Master Penmen, Engrossers and Teachers of Handwriting (IAMPETH). Sarah is originally from Little Rock, Arkansas, but now lives in Austin, TX.

Excellent Resource For Learning Copperplate Calligraphy! I am a relative newcomer to calligraphy and copperplate lettering. I received my copy of this newly published book, Copperplate Calligraphy from A to Z, by Sarah Richardson. My immediate impression was that this is a quality book printed on substantial paper. The subject matter is presented in a clear and concise manner. The explanations for the formation of letters and flourishes are excellent and simple to follow. My evening was filled with a number of hours reading through the book and practicing the letter formations as described in the book. What an enjoyable and beneficial tool to add to my calligraphy library. Well done!A Beautiful Guide This is such a beautiful book! Calligraphy is something I've always admired but never had the patience to actually learn. I'm hoping this book will help me change that (and if not, it's going to make a great gift for my calligrapher mom!!). I very much appreciated all the photos and examples in this book. It made it so much easier to figure out if I was holding the pen the correct way or if I was doing my letter properly. I appreciated the suggestions of materials, the tips for beginners, and care that went into each paragraph about strokes. Truly, this is a step by step guide. My one criticism is that the practice pages in the back are very glossy, which seems bad for actually writing on with ink. I ended up just photo-copying those pages. All in all, I think this book is a great guide for those looking to brush up on their skills or those just beginning to learn calligraphy.Wonderful, detailed guidebook As someone who's just getting into calligraphy, I've noticed a trend where the best-written calligraphy books tend to espouse the old-school style of calligraphy, which looks dated now, while books that teach the newer style are less detailed. This book bridges the gap. It walks you through technique, materials and practice step by step. It's not so long as to be intimidating, either. Who's honestly going to read a 400 page tome on calligraphy? I've really been enjoying the exercises and feel like this was a great choice for my first beginner purchase. If you want to do calligraphy professionally, you may want to pick up that 400 page tome later.
