We were wrong.

They decimated Earth during the Long Winter.
Now the grid has returned, and they won't stop until the human race is extinct.

In their darkest hour, they discover a new hope for survival. But it comes at an unthinkable price, with consequences that will change everything.

After the Long Winter, Emma Matthews and James Sinclair hoped life would get back to normal. They've settled down in Camp Seven and welcomed their first child, a daughter. And they have waited and watched the sky for any signs of the grid's return.

When NASA discovers that several asteroids have broken from the Kuiper Belt and are headed for Earth, James instantly realizes the truth: the grid is back. And this battle will be one to the very end.

As he and his team prepare for humanity's last stand in space and on the ground, Emma makes a discovery closer to home, one that will change life for her and James once again.

With war raging around them, Emma and James fight to keep their family alive. In the cold darkness, humanity splinters. New alliances emerge. At every turn, Emma and James face new dangers--and question whom to trust.

Just when it seems that all hope is lost, James uncovers what may be the key to humanity's survival. But it comes with enormous risks. To implement his plan, he and Emma will have to survive the grid and another, even more deadly enemy. One thing is certain: their gambit will change the future of the human race forever.

Praise for A.G. Riddle

"Well-constructed and tightly-wound as a fine Swiss watch--DEPARTURE has non-stop action, an engaging plot and, of course, wheels within wheels."
-- Diana Gabaldon, bestselling author of Outlander

Another great read! If you are reading this review, odds are you have read the previous storys leading up to this one. I am off to find the final novella "The Lost Colony". As usual, James is in a real jam and Emma is back at camp on this new strange planet. She has no idea what is coming at them. James found a clue from his best friend Harry. He was found in a large cave and a planet hurricane....a Real whopper is upon them along with another predator that makes T Rex look like a family pet. Great story. Thank you Gerry!!!!Has a few nice high spots among the same ol', same ol' It’s said that sequels are never as good as the original. In spite of that cliché, The Solar War has some excellent high points. As expected, the Grid has retaliated in the years since Winter World. Their retaliation is strong, deceptive and irresistible. The ultimate destruction of the human race seems assured. Yet, humanity is thrown an unexpected life line. Why?Humanity is overwhelmed. James Sinclair is now a family man, and Emma is now the mother of James’ children. Together, they must rally the few remaining humans and make a pact with the Devil, the Grid, to survive. But does the Grid have another agenda? It certainly seems as though its agenda is not human survival.Although this book had breath-taking high points, I found much of it repetitive and boring. I would find myself skipping blocks of pages and repeating a silent mantra, “get on with it”. In addition, the character of Richard Chandler did not ring true. While there are certainly egotistical power-hungry manipulators in play, most try to be associated with success and flee far from unavoidable disasters with which they can be associated. It seems like the unavoidable destruction of the Earth and extinction of humanity is the kind of disaster that characters like Richard Chandler would distance himself from.Still, most readers will love The Solar War and sci-fi readers everywhere will thrill to many of its high points…especially the ending.Edge of my seat Great character development, I really cared about them. I'm not crazy about battle scenes, so I skimmed them for the more technical, and the relationship stuff. But it kept me engaged throughout, and now I'm furious. One, that I have to wait until November for the last installment, and two, that it's going to be shorter. This is worth a longer read.
